Welcome
I’m so glad you’re here.
About Me
Hi, and welcome! I’m Heather, a Certified Sex Therapist and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) in Ontario, Canada.
I’m so glad you’re here.
Starting therapy or finding a new therapist can feel really overwhelming or uncomfortable, but I promise it won’t always be that way. My goal is to make therapy feel like a safe, supportive, accepting , comfortable space and experience. I’ve gone through a few of my own therapists over the years, and I tend to work in the ways that always felt best for me as a client - feeling heard, important, understood, and challenged appropriately.
I am not a rigid, blank-faced therapist (I use humor and sarcasm to get points across, cannot hide my facial expressions, and will probably cuss). I am a comforting and accepting therapist (you will probably hear me say “that makes sense” or “that is so normal” often). And I am invested in your growth (so yes, I will challenge you to recognize your strengths and to show yourself compassion and empathy as well as helping you be accountable for your role/piece).
I work from an attachment perspective, which basically means that I look at your experiences, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors from more than one angle and in relation to others around you, including your childhood, peer relationships, adult experiences, and self-talk to help me understand your world view. From there, we will work together to identify and challenge inaccurate or unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving, and make sense of your feelings in a non-judgmental way. Ideally, this leaves you with a better and kinder understanding of yourself and your experiences, along with tools to deal with challenging feelings or experiences in the future.
TRAINING
I have specialized training in sex therapy and am a recognized as a Certified Sex Therapist (CST) through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT).
I have completed training specific to couples therapy, including Gottman Level 1 and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
I have completed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) training for working with trauma.
Counselling Services
Couples therapy is a place where your relationship is the focus. I work with couples from an attachment perspective, informed by Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT, Sue Johnson) to build connection, understanding, compassion, communication, and empathy. As a Certified Sex Therapist, many of my couples clients are seeking support in improving their intimate lives. I work with all types of relationships (2SLGBTQ+), including non-monogamous relationships.
I support couples looking to strengthen their relationship, improve intimacy, address sexual issues, heal from betrayal, and navigate conflict. Sex therapy can be part of individual therapy or couples therapy, and isn’t a specific session to book on it’s own. If you’re a couple interested in sex therapy, you would book a couples session.
Couples sessions are $185 for a 50 minute session. Longer sessions are available, price increases with length of session.
Individual therapy is a space tailored to you. The topics you want to discuss (this includes sex!), feelings you want to express, thoughts you want to process, skills you want to learn, questions you want to ponder. I work with concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem/self-concept, identity, life transitions, relationship concerns, and sexual concerns. Sex therapy can be part of individual therapy or couples therapy, and isn’t a specific session to book on it’s own.
Individual therapy sessions are $150 for a 50 minute session. Longer sessions are available, prices increase with duration.
EMDR is an evidence-based intervention for processing trauma. The utilization of eye movements, or other bi-lateral stimulation, accelerates the processing of information and allows your brain to process traumatic experiences more rapidly. This intervention also addresses ways in which trauma is connected to your nervous system and your body, assisting you with processing the physical manifestations of trauma in your nervous system. (check out https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/ for more information)
EMDR sessions can be anywhere from 50-80 minutes long, depending on your goals and tolerance. 50 minute EMDR sessions are $150, 80 minute EMDR sessions are $200.
